Programme No. 12

16th December 2009 - 9.45pm on Favourite Channel

(If you are not a Melita subscriber, you can either click on the Favourite Channel logo in the showcase of this website or else log on to www.favouritechannel.tv and watch us online through the live streaming service!)

This week, Allegro Con Brio will be focusing on 20TH CENTURY MUSIC. As usual, Ian Peter will start by giving us an overview of the 20th-century classical music scene from its precursors, inception, and through to its later stages and developments, highlighting, along the way, the most influential composers of the time, of course.

Our guest for this week will be harpist Dr. Anne Marie Camilleri Podestà. Dr. Podestà will be speaking about her career as a harpist, as well as about all her international experiences. She will also be briefing us on her upcoming concerts and events.

This week’s concert will feature pianists Christine Borg, Michela Galea, Janet Falzon, and Ian Peter Bugeja, who will be performing works for the piano by Poulenc, Ginastera, Bridge, and Cowell respectively.

Just as she does every week, Christina will be giving us some information – this week she will be shedding some light on 20th-century composer Philip Glass, as well as on the timpani.

As usual, the programme will be ending with a special feature. This week’s feature will be showcasing the Berlin Philharmoniker (Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra) performing the first movement from Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphonie Classique, No. 1 in D major (Op. 25); under the direction of the legendary Herbert Von Karajan - the perfect example of the ‘maestro as a superstar’.

Our guest for this week will be the young internationally-acclaimed pianist Charlene Farrugia. At the tender age of 13, Charlene was the youngest soloist to ever perform with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (the then National Orchestra). Since then, she has never looked back and has already managed to establish herself as one of the leading pianists of the country, backed by her various international experiences.

This week’s concert will feature pianists Beatrice Calleja and Michaela Galea, performing works by Chopin & Liszt respectively, as well as tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens - who will be performing two of Schubert’s Lieder, accompanied by talented pianist Gisèle Grima.
Just as she does every week, Christina will be giving us some information about a particular instrument: the oboe. She will also be shedding the spotlight on one of the world’s most gifted pianists: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.
As usual, the programme will be ending with an international feature. This week’s feature will focus on Edward Elgar’s Nimrod, from his very well known Enigma Variations - performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Sir Colin Davis.

So,  do not forget to watch us once again by tuning in to Favourite Channel on Wednesday 16th December at 9.45 pm! If you don’t manage to watch us on Wednesday, you can catch the repeats, either on Thursday at 4.00 pm, or on Sunday at 6.30 pm
